The heart of God – 9

Jesus Was Whipped and Shed His Blood

We learn that through the precious blood Jesus shed when He was whipped, our sins are forgiven and we can enjoy a healthy life free from sickness and weakness.

Reading Passage: Isaiah 53:5–6
“He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed. …”

Memory Verse: 1 Peter 2:24
“And He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.”

Reference Verse: Hebrews 9:22
“According to the Law, almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.”

Isaiah 53:6
“All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; but the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him.”

Before being crucified, Jesus suffered all kinds of ridicule and contempt from the Roman soldiers. They struck His head with a reed, spat on Him, and whipped His entire body with a scourge that had sharp pieces of lead attached to its ends. Each time the whip wrapped around His body and was pulled back, His flesh tore, blood poured out, and even His bones became exposed. Why did Jesus, the Son of God, have to endure such severe whipping and shed so much blood?

1. To solve the problem of sin and to heal diseases

Throughout the Bible, we clearly see the providence behind the sufferings Jesus endured on the cross. Especially in Isaiah 53:5–6, it says, “He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed. All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; but the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him.” Jesus was pierced and crushed because of our faults and sins. He was chastened so that we may enjoy peace, and He was whipped so that we may be healed from all diseases.

In Matthew 9, when people brought to Jesus a paralytic lying on a bed, Jesus saw their faith and healed him. Before healing him, Jesus first said, “Take courage, son; your sins are forgiven,” solving the problem of sin first. Then Jesus said, “Get up, pick up your bed, and go home,” and immediately the paralytic rose, picked up his bed, and walked.

In John 5, Jesus healed a man who had been sick for thirty-eight years and afterward said, “Behold, you have become well; do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse happens to you.” This teaches us that in order to be free from sickness, the problem of sin must first be resolved before God. And because the law of the spiritual realm requires that sin be atoned for only by the shedding of blood, Jesus was whipped and shed His blood on our behalf.

2. To Carry Our Weaknesses and Bear Our Diseases

Matthew 8:17 says, “This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: ‘He Himself took our weaknesses and carried our diseases.’” Therefore, anyone who understands the meaning of Jesus being whipped and believes this truth has no reason to suffer from weakness or sickness. First Peter 2:24 says, “By His stripes you were healed,” because Jesus has already solved the problem of all sins. Since Jesus was whipped and shed His blood to carry our weaknesses and diseases, no disease or weakness can enter a person who lives in righteousness before God. This agrees with Exodus 15:26, where God promises that if we listen to His Word, do what is right in His sight, and keep His commands, He will not allow any of the diseases that came upon the Egyptians to come upon us, for He is the LORD who heals us.

God’s standard of righteousness is different from human righteousness. For example, when a beloved child is hurt by someone, worldly parents think it is fair to return the same harm or even more. But God teaches us to overcome evil with good, to turn the other cheek, to love our enemies, and to pursue peace. God’s righteousness is completely different from human thinking, so we must live according to the truth. When we love God, keeping His commands is not difficult. As we pray and try, God gives us grace and strength, and the Holy Spirit helps us. Therefore, if we obey God’s Word and keep His commands, no disease can come upon us.

Even if sickness comes, we do not need to fear, because God is the One who heals. When we discover what was not right before Him and repent sincerely, the God of love can heal completely. However, some people call God “Almighty” with their lips, but when they face problems, they rely on the world instead of God. If a person becomes sick and immediately goes to the hospital first, it shows that they do not truly trust God’s almighty power, and such faith cannot please Him. King Asa is an example—when he had a disease in his feet, he relied on physicians rather than God, and eventually died (2 Chronicles 16).

3. The Reason Jesus Shed His Precious Blood

Hebrews 9:22 says, “According to the Law, almost all things are purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” This means that forgiveness of sins requires the shedding of blood. In the Old Testament, whenever people sinned, they had to offer the blood of an animal to receive forgiveness. But the blood of animals, offered repeatedly year after year, could not completely remove sin. It was only temporary. Therefore, Jesus, the Son of God, came to this world in a human body to become the perfect sacrifice. He shed His blood on the cross to forgive our sins once for all.

Leviticus 17:11 says, “For the life of the flesh is in the blood… for it is the blood by reason of the life that makes atonement.” Because life is in the blood, sin can be forgiven only through the shedding of blood. Jesus, who had no blemish or fault, offered His own body on the cross to solve the problem of sin completely. His precious blood became the perfect sacrifice that atoned for all our sins—past, present, and future.

Hebrews 10:19–20 says, “Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He opened for us through the veil, that is, His flesh…” Originally, Adam was a living spirit who could clearly communicate with God. But after sinning, he lost that fellowship. For Adam and his descendants, God prepared a way of forgiveness and a path to communicate with Him again. In the Old Testament, this was done through the sacrificial system. Only the priest could enter the holy place to represent the people.

In the New Testament, Jesus, the Son of God, came in the flesh and shed His blood on the cross. He completely solved the problem of sin. Now, through His blood, we have the right to enter the holy place and communicate with God directly through the Holy Spirit. In the past, people had to offer animal sacrifices every time they sinned. But now this is no longer necessary, because Jesus shed His blood once for all and became the eternal sacrifice.

Therefore, God’s children who believe in Jesus have no reason to suffer from sickness or weakness. I pray that you will deeply remember the love and grace of the cross, live with faith every day, and receive the blessing of good health and success in all things as your soul prospers.

Who Was King Asa?

King Asa deeply loved God. When his mother worshiped the detestable Asherah idol, he even removed her from her position as queen. But later, his heart changed. Instead of trusting God, he depended on foreign nations and even persecuted God’s prophet. In the 39th year of his reign, he developed a severe disease in his feet. Instead of seeking God, he relied on physicians. As a result, he died in the 41st year of his reign.
