Some people today wonder whether it is still possible, as in the days of Abraham or the prophets, to know God’s will and understand what lies ahead. The Bible gives us a clear direction regarding this question.
God created and has cultivated mankind in order to gain true children who grow to resemble His image, understand His heart, and love Him sincerely from the depths of their hearts. God fellowships with such children, and He guides and protects their lives.
Abraham, the forefather of faith, is called “the friend of God” in the Bible. He was not without weakness, but by choosing to obey God’s word without dividing his heart, he came to build a deep relationship of trust with God.
In Genesis 17:1, when Abram was ninety-nine years old, God said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before Me.” God then established a covenant with him and changed his name to “Abraham,” meaning “the father of many nations.” This shows that Abraham was called to live a life of honest obedience before God as a human being.
In Genesis 18:17, God also said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?” and revealed to him what He would do concerning Sodom and Gomorrah. This was not because Abraham was a perfect man, but because he lived a life that feared God and obeyed His word, and thus remained in a relationship of trust with God.
Even today, God calls us to live a holy life. Though we are still growing, God walks with those who sincerely try to obey His word. When we live according to His word, He gives us understanding and guides our path. Therefore, true blessing does not lie in extraordinary revelations themselves, but in a life of obedience to God’s word and walking together with Him. As we grow in sensitivity to the Holy Spirit, our hearts are shaped to hear His guidance and discern His leading. Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, God helps us discern the path we should take and grants us the wisdom needed in our daily lives.
