We have received salvation through Jesus Christ. Our sins have been forgiven, we have become children of God, and through Jesus we have received eternal life. There is no greater gift than this.
We also come to the Lord with many prayers. We pray for healing, for our families, for help with our problems, and for the things we need. God hears our prayers, and we have received many answers and much help from Him.
But today, let us ask ourselves another question. Jesus has done so much for me. What can I do for Him today?
Sometimes our faith can become focused mainly on receiving. We ask for healing, blessings, help, and answers. When we do not receive what we hoped for, we may become disappointed or even begin to doubt God’s love. But we should not think that because God is love, He must simply give us everything we want. A loving relationship is not only about receiving. It is also about knowing the heart of the one we love and wanting to do what pleases that person.
When we truly love someone, we naturally want to do something for that person. We make time for them. We help them. Even when it is difficult, we may gladly make sacrifices for them. We do these things not simply because we have to, but because we love them. Our relationship with Jesus should be the same. We should not serve Him only because we feel that it is our duty. We want to do something for Him because we love Him.
So today, instead of only praying, “Jesus, please give me what I need,” let us also pray, “Jesus, what can I do for You today?”
Maybe there is someone you need to contact. Maybe someone needs your help. Perhaps there is someone you should pray for or forgive. Maybe you need to apologize, change a wrong habit, share the gospel, or faithfully do something God has already entrusted to you. We can become the hands and feet of Jesus by helping people, comforting them, praying for them, and sharing His love with them. We can also support the work of the church and ministry in whatever way we are able, so that others can continue serving and caring for people.
There are many ways to do something for Jesus. The important thing is not the size of what we do. What matters is the heart behind it. We are not trying to earn salvation or make God love us more. We already received His love and salvation through Jesus Christ. We serve Him because we are thankful, and because we love Him.
Take some time to listen. God may remind you of His Word. A person may come to your mind. You may realize something you need to change or remember something you should do. When that happens, do not keep saying, “I will do it later.” Obey today. Love becomes real when it leads us to action.
Our relationship with Jesus should not be one in which we come to Him only when we need something. It is a relationship of love. We thank Jesus for our salvation, remember His grace, seek His will, listen to His Word, and willingly do what pleases Him. As we do this, our relationship with Jesus grows deeper.
So before asking the Lord for something today, ask one simple question. “Jesus, You have given so much to me. What can I do for You today?”
