“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” — Proverbs 16:18
The Bible tells us that pride leads to a fall. Then what is a humble person like? As you read these four characteristics, examine yourself and see how many of them you find in your life.
- A humble person does not compare themselves with others
You worked hard and achieved a good result. You may have received a high score, become skilled at something, found a good job, achieved more, or received praise from others. There is nothing wrong with doing well. The problem begins when you look at another person and think, “I am better than this person.”
You may be better at something, but the other person may be better at something else. You may have more education or more possessions, but someone else may be more patient, more generous, or more caring.
A humble person is thankful for what they have, but they do not use it to look down on others. Instead, they think, “What is good about this person? What can I learn from them?”
Humility does not mean thinking that you are worse than others. Even when you are good at something, you do not use it to make yourself higher or to put others down. You recognize and respect the good qualities in others, and you are willing to learn from them.
- A humble person listens to others
Someone suggests a different way of doing something. But before the person even finishes speaking, you think, “What do you know? I know better. My way is right.”
This can happen at home, among friends, at school, at work, or in church. Sometimes we want others to accept our ideas, but we are not willing to accept theirs.
A humble person thinks, “I could be wrong.” Even if the other person is younger or has less experience, they listen first. And even if the other person’s opinion is different from their own, if it is not against the truth or sinful, they do not insist on their own way. They respect the other person’s opinion and try to find a good way forward together.
- A humble person looks at their own faults first
You have an argument with someone. Later, you remember everything the other person did wrong. “They started it. They said that to me. They treated me badly.”
But what about you? Was there anything wrong with your words or your attitude?
In Jesus’ parable, the Pharisee looked at the tax collector and said, “I am not like this tax collector.” He could see another person’s faults, but he could not see his own pride. The tax collector, however, did not look at anyone else. He beat his chest and prayed, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” (Luke 18:13)
A humble person asks, “What did I do wrong?” before asking, “What did that person do wrong?”
- A humble person denies themselves before God
Humility becomes most clear when our thoughts are different from God’s Word.
Suppose someone insults you, treats you unfairly, or hurts your pride. You may immediately think, “I will pay them back. Why should I be the one to endure this?”
But Jesus taught us not to take revenge. He said that if someone slaps us on the right cheek, we should turn the other cheek also (Matthew 5:39).
This is the moment when humility is revealed. We may think, “I know what God’s Word says, but this situation is different. That person was wrong first. This time, I will do what I think is right.”
If we think this way, we are putting our own judgment above God’s Word.
But when their thoughts are different from God’s Word, a humble person is willing to deny themselves and say, “Lord, I am hurt. I want to respond in my own way. But You are right. I will obey Your Word.”
This is true humility.
Humility does not mean thinking that you have no value or ability. It means not trying to place yourself above others, respecting them, and being willing to admit when you are wrong. Most importantly, it means laying down your own thoughts before God, accepting that His Word is right, and obeying Him.
Examine Yourself Today
When my thoughts are different from God’s Word, who do I say is right?
Pride says, “I am right.” Humility denies self and says, “God is right.”
Jesus said, “For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” — Matthew 23:12

Today through this QT I learnt the 4 important Characteristics of a humble Person which I must have.
First one is a humble person does not compare themselves with others. Means I don’t have to compare myself with others, I don’t have to think that I have more knowledge than the other person.
Second one is a humble person listens to others. I don’t have to focus only my point of view, instead I have to listen to others first. Yes our POV is also important but becoz, of our POV we don’t have to ignore others.
The third one is a humble person looks on their own fault. This thing also I have to add in my personality, that I have to look on my own faith not to others.
And the last one is a humble person denies themselves before God. Yes we are nothing before God. He has chosen us, so we have to confess that Father God I am nothing before you, you are the creator of the heaven and the earth. We can’t do anything without you.
These are the 4 characteristics which I have to develop in myself.
Amen.

There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man. True nobility is being superior to your former self. I heard this quote one time in a school assembly and wrote it down in my note book. This lesson reminds me of the quote and it is truly beautiful. When you are humble, you learn and don’t act oversmart. You shouldn’t think you are superior to your fellow man. You shouldn’t be proud and boast about your achievements just because you’re good at something. Humans are not made to be the same. We all have different qualities, likes, dislikes and hobbies. Accept your mistakes and be kind and caring and only then will you be respected. The Bible states that God sets himself against the proud but gives grace to the humble. We should always obey God’s word and not put our judgement over God’s because he is the creator and we should listen to God because God knows what’s best for us and knows what’s right.
