Many people say that God placed the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil to test mankind, or that eating from it was an act of challenging God’s authority. But beyond those explanations, there is a far more important reason. By eating the fruit, sin entered the world, and a door was opened for humanity to experience what sin truly is.

There was no sin in the Garden of Eden. Therefore, there was no hatred, no conflict, no betrayal, no separation, and no death. But after Adam and Eve ate from the tree, humanity began living in a sinful world and started experiencing the painful results of sin. Through these experiences, we came to understand how fearful and destructive sin really is. Sin was something that could never have been imagined in the Garden of Eden
Today, many children grow up in abundance and often feel little appreciation for food or comfort because they have never lacked anything. In contrast, those who lived through war, poverty, and hunger deeply appreciate even small blessings. Their experience creates a deeper sense of gratitude.
In the same way, God desires to lead us to the Kingdom of Heaven. If we had existed in Heaven from the beginning, we would not fully understand the value of God’s love or eternal life. We experience pain in this earthly life through sin, suffering, wounds, and separation. Through these experiences, we come to understand how precious God’s unchanging love and eternal joy truly are.
Here on earth, we experience betrayal, relationships breaking apart, and even love becoming hatred. Yet in Heaven, the love of the Lord never changes, never ends, and there is no sorrow or separation. Because we experience the limits of earthly love, we come to understand the priceless worth of God’s perfect love in Heaven.
A human lifetime may last 100 years at most, but the life we will live in Heaven is eternal. The reason this eternal life feels so precious is that, through the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, God allowed us to experience the reality of sin and human life on this earth—so that we would clearly recognize the value of Heaven. This is part of God’s deep love and sovereign plan.
This is the reason God placed the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, so that we could truly understand the value of Heaven.
