It is not wrong to ask God for blessings. Jesus told us to ask, seek, and knock. So it is natural for believers to bring their needs, problems, and difficulties before God in prayer.
But the important question is this: “Why am I asking for blessings?” If the purpose of blessing is not the Kingdom of God, but only to enjoy the world, live more comfortably, and succeed for myself, then it may be closer to greed than faith. The prosperity gospel is not simply asking God for blessings. It is the heart that loves personal desire more than God, and tries to use God to fulfill that desire. In the end, it comes from a heart that loves the world more than the Kingdom of God.
Biblical blessing is different. God wants to bless us. But first, we must think about why God gives us blessings. God blesses us so that we may be used where His hand is needed. He blesses us so that we may help people in need, preach the gospel, and live for the expansion of His Kingdom.
Material things are not the goal. They are tools. If the blessings I receive can save someone, if they can help me do the work of God, and if they can help the gospel go farther, then those blessings are not worldly greed. They become a channel for the Kingdom of God.
But there are reasons why we do not receive true blessings. First, there may be greed in us. We may want to receive much, but not want to sow much. We may want to reap, but not want to labor. We may want to sow only a little and receive a lot. We may expect fruit from a place where we have not sown anything. But this is not faith. It is greed.
It is not true faith to want good results without studying, to want a good job without learning skills, to want a high income without working faithfully, or to want great rewards without devotion. Faith means trusting God while faithfully doing what we must do. If we pray, we must also sow through action. We must sow through study, through learning skills, through faithfulness, through loyalty, and through devotion.
Second, we cannot handle blessings properly when our own benefit comes before God. If we treat worship lightly in order to earn more money, if we easily give up keeping the Lord’s Day for our own success, and if our spiritual priorities collapse because of material things, then what looks like a blessing can become a temptation that causes us to fall. If we earn money but become far from God, that is not true blessing. If we succeed but our soul becomes sick, that is not true blessing either.
True blessing begins with the soul prospering. For the soul to prosper means to come out of the love of the world. It means to lay down greed and selfish benefit, and to recover the image of God. It means to become more like God in love, goodness, and truthfulness.
When our soul prospers, God wants to bless us. God does not want us to always live in lack and difficulty. When we become people who can handle blessings in the right way, God takes care of all things in our lives and gives us the blessings we need.
This is because a person whose soul prospers does not become proud after receiving material blessings. Such a person does not leave God after receiving blessings. Such a person does not use blessings only to satisfy personal desire. Instead, that person uses blessings to save people and build the Kingdom of God.
Today, I examine myself. Why am I asking for blessings? Am I trying to reap without sowing? Do I want to sow only a little and receive much? Am I seeking God before material things? Whom do I want to help with the blessings I receive?
Today, I want to pray like this: “God, let my soul prosper first, and help me become a person who can handle blessings in the right way. Help me live not for my own desires, but for Your Kingdom. Let me become Your hand that saves someone through the blessings I receive.”
