Why Does the Bible Say That the Kingdom of God Is Not About Eating and Drinking?

We all want to live well and enjoy a comfortable life. We hope to have everything we need here on earth, and we also look forward to heaven, imagining what we will eat, what kind of homes we will live in, and how happy we will be.

However, the Bible tells us: “For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 14:17, NIV)

This does not mean that there will be no enjoyment of food and drink in heaven. We often think of a good environment as one where we can live comfortably and have everything we need. But even more precious than material abundance is a life filled with God’s righteousness, goodness, and love.

It is a life where people do not hate or quarrel with one another, but instead care for others, seek the good of others rather than their own interests, and love and serve one another. In such a life, there is true peace and joy.

Jesus said, “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” (John 13:34, NIV)

Imagine a world where the love, goodness, gentleness, humility, forgiveness, and service taught in the Bible are perfectly practiced. Wouldn’t that be the kind of heaven we long for?

Then, should we wait until we enter heaven to have such hearts?

No. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we have received forgiveness of sins, and eternal life has already begun for us.

Jesus said, “Whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life.” (John 5:24, NIV)

Therefore, we should begin living a heavenly life here on earth, becoming more like our Lord.

With the help of the Holy Spirit, we must recognize and cast away the evil hidden in our hearts, replacing hatred with love, conflict with peace, and selfishness with service. We must go beyond simply doing good deeds and allow our hearts themselves to be transformed, becoming filled with goodness and love.

Jesus also taught us, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness.” (Matthew 6:33, NIV) What we should seek first is to cultivate God’s righteousness in our hearts and live according to His will.

Our life on earth and our life in heaven are not separate. Heaven is the place we will enter one day, but heavenly life begins here on earth. This is what it means to live a true Christian life.

Today, let us be the first to forgive, the first to show consideration, and the first to put love into action. Let us bring the love and peace of heaven into the places where we live.

Please share this message with your family and friends. May we all begin practicing a heavenly life together, right here on earth.
