Pregnancy should be celebrated. The beginning of a new life is precious, wonderful, and mysterious.
However, not every pregnancy begins with joy and celebration. It may be an unexpected pregnancy. There may be financial difficulties, family problems, or concerns about health. There may also be painful circumstances that are difficult to share with others.
We cannot judge these situations too quickly. Each person may have pain and fear that we do not know about.
Today, let us set these different circumstances aside for a moment and first consider one question through the Bible.
When does life begin, and how does God view life in the womb?
David confessed: “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” Psalm 139:13
David did not say that God began caring for him only after he was born. He confessed that God formed him in his mother’s womb.
The life in the womb may not yet appear fully formed to human eyes. However, it is not something that came into existence by accident. It is a life that God Himself is forming.
God also said to Jeremiah: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.” Jeremiah 1:5
This verse speaks about Jeremiah’s special calling. At the same time, it shows that God knew him before he was born.
Something amazing also happened when Mary visited Elizabeth. At that time, Elizabeth was about six months pregnant.
“As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.” Luke 1:44
The Bible calls John the Baptist in Elizabeth’s womb a “baby,” not merely a piece of tissue. He had not yet been born, but he was already alive, moving, and responding in the womb.
Today, we know that a baby born at about 24 weeks, or around six months of pregnancy, may survive outside the womb with specialized medical care. Therefore, abortion after this stage is an even more serious and weighty matter.
However, this does not mean that abortion is acceptable during the early stages of pregnancy. In early pregnancy, the baby is smaller, and its form and movements may not yet be clearly seen or felt. But the baby in early pregnancy and the baby in later pregnancy are not two different lives. They are the same life growing continuously in the womb.
Life does not suddenly begin at birth. It has already begun and is growing in the womb.
The pregnancy may have been unexpected. The parents may not have wanted the situation, and their circumstances may be frightening and difficult. However, an unwanted situation does not mean that the life itself is wrong.
The pregnancy may not have been part of the parents’ plan, but the life itself is not a mistake.
God, not the parents, is the Lord of life. From a biblical view of life, abortion intentionally ends a life that God is forming in the womb. Therefore, Christians cannot view abortion as merely a personal choice or a medical procedure. We must recognize it as a sin that harms a life given by God.
However, the purpose of speaking this truth is not to attack or condemn people who are afraid. Rather, it is to help those in difficult situations find a way to protect life and to give them practical support.
The church must protect life in the womb. At the same time, it must lovingly embrace mothers who are frightened and confused because of an unplanned pregnancy. Our responsibility does not end with telling a woman to give birth. We must help both the mother and the child live and receive the care they need.
If you are now facing an unplanned pregnancy alone, please do not make a rushed decision. Tell a trusted family member, pastor, and qualified medical professional about your situation, and ask for help. Do not try to carry this burden alone. Seek a way to protect life with the support of people you can trust.
