I Can’t Stop Using My Phone. What Should I Do?

You pick up your phone to check one message before studying. Then you watch a short video, install a game you saw in an ad, and suddenly several hours have passed. Sometimes you open a Bible app to do your quiet time (QT), but one notification leads you to messages and videos. Even after going to bed, you cannot put your phone down. This happens not only to teenagers but also to adults.

Many apps are designed to keep you using them. They constantly offer new videos, messages, likes, and notifications. The longer you stay, the more advertisements the companies can show and the more money they make. You may not pay for a free app with money, but you pay with your time and attention.

Of course, using your phone feels more enjoyable than studying. A phone gives you instant entertainment with a single swipe, while studying requires effort and its results appear much later. When immediate pleasure competes with a future reward, our brains tend to choose what feels good now. It is not a fair contest from the beginning.

The future results of today’s choices are not immediately visible. In a recent PISA study, students who used digital devices for leisure for up to one hour a day scored forty-nine points higher in mathematics than those who used them for five to seven hours. Excessive use can affect not only your studies today but also the abilities you are building for your future.

If you spend two hours a day using your phone without a clear purpose, that becomes about seven hundred and thirty hours a year. That is about thirty full days—an entire month. You are losing one month of every year that could have been used to build your future.

Adolescence is an important time for learning and forming habits that may continue throughout life. Small habits today can shape your abilities and the direction of your future. The Bible says, “Redeeming the time, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:16, KJV). Redeeming the time means taking back the hours that would otherwise be wasted and using them for something valuable.

How, then, can you take back your time from your phone? Decide in advance what you will do when you return home from school. Leave your phone in the living room, freshen up, have a snack, and sit at your desk. Open your book and begin with five easy questions or study for just ten minutes. Do not wait until you feel motivated. Often, motivation and concentration come after you begin.

Using your phone is not always true rest. When you keep watching short videos and reading messages, your brain continues processing new information. If you need a break, close your eyes for a while, stretch, exercise, or take a short walk.

Your friends may complain if you do not reply immediately. You can tell them, “I’m studying now, so my reply may be late. I’ll check my messages when I finish.” Ask them to call if something is truly urgent. You do not have to answer every message immediately.

Check your screen-time report for the past week. Find the app that took most of your time. Turn off its notifications or delete it for one week. At night, charge your phone in the living room instead of beside your bed.

If you reach for your phone because you feel lonely or anxious, do not cover those feelings with more videos. Tell God honestly how you feel and pray. If you fail, do not give up. Think about why you picked up your phone and begin again.

Self-control does not mean giving up every enjoyable thing. It is the strength to put down something less important in order to protect what matters more—your relationship with God, the people you love, your health, and your dreams.

Let’s Think Together

Which app took most of your time last week? What did you gain from it, and what might your future self have lost?

You are probably reading this on your phone right now. What will you open next?

What routine will you follow when you return home from school?

Such a beautiful and meaningful message! Truly inspiring, especially for teenagers. I am thankful to Lord God for this beautiful message! 💟
Yes, I examined in myself that my screentime was also quite high….
But today I got to know that what should I do!
If I’m using my phone for an hour it means I’m paying my time for it….
Instead of wasting precious hours on my phone, I can invest that time in building the future I dream of…!!!
I truly thank you God for this message.
    🫶🏻❣️♥️💟💖

This message is so underrated but powerful. Honestly, not just kids but adults need a full session on this subject…

We really need to put phone away for sometime and talk to God honestly about our feelings…
