Is What I Have Really Mine?

We live on this earth with families, homes, jobs, cars, and possessions. Our homes and cars may be registered in our names, and the money we earn is in our bank accounts. So naturally, we think, “This is mine.” But is it really?

Think about heaven for a moment. If God gives us a home and many good things to enjoy there, we will receive and enjoy them. But we would never say, “I created this. It was mine from the beginning.” We would know that we have it because God gave it to us. When we think about it, life on earth is not so different.

God created the land, the sky, the sunshine, and the rain. He also gave us life. We may legally own property, and we may have worked very hard for what we have. But if we go back to the beginning, even our ability to work depends on things we did not create ourselves. Our life, health, abilities, opportunities, and the world in which we live were all given to us by God. And no matter how much we own, we cannot keep it forever. When we leave this earth, we leave everything behind.

The Bible says, “The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” Psalm 24:1

This gives us a different way of looking at what we have. Yes, a house may legally belong to me. The money in my bank account may be mine to use. But from a spiritual point of view, everything ultimately belongs to God. For the years I live on this earth, He allows me to use and manage what He has given me. In other words, what I have is not only something I own. It is also something God has entrusted to me.

This helps us understand what it means to deny ourselves. Denying ourselves does not mean that we must give up our homes, jobs, or possessions. It means giving up the attitude, “This is mine, so I can do whatever I want with it.” We begin to recognize that what we have ultimately belongs to God.

But this is not only about our possessions. It is also about our lives. We may call Jesus “Lord” while still living as the lord of our own lives. We decide what we want and then ask God to help us achieve it. We choose the direction we want to go and then ask Him to bless it. There is nothing wrong with asking God for help or praying for His blessing. But we need to consider who is actually leading our lives. Is Jesus simply helping me accomplish my plans, or am I following His plans?

If Jesus is truly our Lord, we do not only say, “Lord, please help me do what I want.” We also ask, “Lord, what do You want me to do?” We seek His will and allow Him to direct our lives. This is where self-denial becomes very practical. It is not only giving up something we desire. It is giving up the right to say, “This is my life, so I will live it however I want.” We recognize that our life itself came from God and belongs to Him.

We often say that God has entrusted us with a mission. A pastor may say that God entrusted him with a church. Someone may believe that God gave them a ministry, a position, or a responsibility to share the gospel. That is true. But God has entrusted us with much more than a ministry or a calling. He has entrusted us with our entire lives.

Our time, health, talents, experience, possessions, family, work, relationships, and even each day we live have been entrusted to us. This changes the way we see everyday life. My family is not separate from my calling. My job is not separate from my calling. The way I use my money is not separate from my faith. How I spend my time, use my abilities, treat people, and fulfill my responsibilities are all part of the life God has entrusted to me. Serving God, therefore, is not limited to what we do at church. We serve Him through the way we live the life He has given us.

Jesus said, “And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?” Luke 16:12

This verse gives us something important to consider. Jesus speaks of being faithful with “someone else’s property.” What is in our hands now may legally belong to us, but ultimately everything comes from God and remains His. We are using it for a time. So the important question is not simply, “How much do I have?” It is, “How faithfully am I using what God has entrusted to me?”

One day, everything we temporarily possess on this earth will be left behind. What matters is whether we were faithful with the life, time, opportunities, abilities, and possessions God placed in our hands. What God has entrusted to us is not just our money, our talents, or our ministry. It is our whole life.

Questions

Do I call Jesus “Lord” while still living as the lord of my own life?
Have I thought that only my ministry, calling, or church responsibilities were entrusted to me by God?
Do I see my family, work, time, possessions, abilities, and relationships as part of what God has entrusted to me?
How am I using the life God has given me?

Yes, whatever I have does not truly belong to me it belongs to God. God himself has given me everything I have.
This is not only about our home or possessions, but also about our parents, our family, n even our church. God has given all these things to us because he loves us & wants to give us good things.
Therefore, I should never think, this is mine, or I worked hard for this, so I have the right over it. Yes, we do work hard, but it is the Lord who prepares and enables us to do the things he wants us to do, n he is the one who gives us blessings.
So, whatever I have, I should now think about how I can use it for God’s work, because he is the one who has given it to me.

    Amen.
