How Much Have I Changed?

We may have believed in Jesus for many years. We may know more of the Bible, pray more, and have more responsibilities in the church than we did before. But how much have we really changed?

Having a position in the church, being given an important responsibility, or being respected by many people does not necessarily mean that our faith has grown. What matters is how much our actions and our hearts have changed according to God’s Word.

Think about keeping the Lord’s Day. At first, we may go to church because our family or someone else tells us to go. We may go because we are afraid that something bad will happen if we do not keep the Lord’s Day. We may want to do something else but force ourselves to go to church. Sometimes we may even follow our own desires and fail to keep the Lord’s Day.

But as our faith grows, something changes. Even when work comes up or we receive another invitation, we choose to keep the Lord’s Day. We no longer need someone to tell us to go. We choose to obey because we know it is God’s will. As we continue to obey, we also begin to experience God’s promises. We experience His protection, guidance, peace, and blessings. Through these experiences, our trust in His Word becomes stronger.

As we grow even more, our heart changes. The things of the world that once seemed more attractive begin to lose their hold on us. We love the Lord more than the things of the world, so we begin to look forward to the Lord’s Day. Worship becomes a joy, and serving the Lord makes us happy. From the outside, a person may have been “keeping the Lord’s Day” all along. But inside, the reason for keeping it has completely changed.

The same is true with hatred. In the past, when someone hurt us, we may have hated that person and become angry. We may have argued or fought back. After learning God’s Word, we try not to become angry. We may still have hatred in our heart, but because God tells us to forgive, we try to obey.

As we continue to practice the Word and cast away hatred, we begin to understand the other person. As our heart changes further, we no longer forgive only because we have to. Hatred itself begins to disappear, and we can understand and even love the person who hurt us.

Jealousy is another example. In the past, when someone else was praised or became successful, we may have felt uncomfortable. We might congratulate that person with our words while comparing ourselves with them, feeling jealous, or becoming discouraged inside. After learning the Word, we recognize that jealousy is wrong and try to cast it away. Even when our heart is still uncomfortable, we choose to congratulate the person and do what is good.

As our heart changes, we can sincerely rejoice when others do well. It is all right even if we are not recognized. We can even find joy in helping and sacrificing so that someone else can do better.

This is how change takes place. At first, we know that God’s Word is right, but our heart may not want to follow it. We may obey reluctantly, and sometimes we may still follow our own desires and emotions. But as we continue to practice God’s Word, we begin to experience His promises. We experience the peace, joy, protection, and answers that come as we live according to His Word. Through these experiences, we learn to trust His Word more deeply.

As we grow further, we obey because we love God. We begin to love what God loves and dislike what God dislikes. Obeying His Word is no longer something we have to force ourselves to do. It becomes our joy.

This change becomes especially clear when we face difficulties. The Israelites saw the Red Sea divide before them. They ate manna in the wilderness. When they experienced God’s wonderful works, they praised Him and gave thanks. But when there was no water and food became scarce, they complained. At times, they even wanted to go back to Egypt. The wilderness revealed what was in their hearts and the true condition of their faith.

The same is true for us. When our prayers seem unanswered, when things do not go as we planned, when others are recognized but we are not, or when someone hurts us, what is inside our heart begins to come out.

God already knows our hearts. He does not need to test us in order to discover what is inside us. We are often the ones who do not truly know our own hearts. Through difficulties, we can discover what we still need to cast away and how deeply God’s Word has been established in our hearts.

God said to the Israelites as they went through the wilderness: “You shall remember all the way which the LORD your God has led you in the wilderness these forty years, that He might humble you, testing you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.” Deuteronomy 8:2 (NASB)

Spiritual growth produces a clear change: from obeying God’s Word reluctantly, to obeying it and experiencing His promises, and finally, to finding joy in obeying because we love God.

Through today’s message, I was able to understand what level my faith is at. Even if I know the Word and have a lot of knowledge of the Bible, if I am not living my life according to the Bible, then that knowledge is of no use. Until demonstrate my faith through my actions, it has no real meaning. God knows our hearts, and when difficulties or trials come into our lives, they come so that we can examine ourselves and understand what mistakes we have made. God loves us very much and wants us to grow and change. He wants us to remove sins such as hatred, resentment, jealousy, and other wrong feelings from our hearts. Today’s message teaches us to examine ourselves and see how much our hearts have truly changed.

    Amen. 🌷
